FNC 2017 • Bangkok Nites & Téhéran Tabou

BANGKOK NITES

ENGLISH

We have all heard how Bangkok is the place for sex tourists to visit. Director Katsuya Tomita does a tremendous job of putting the lives of the young men and women trapped in the sex trade industry in context with the socio-political events of the last century in a region that has made the country folk prey for sex traffickers.

The film is a collaboration between Japan, France, Laos and Thailand. The cast: Subenja Pongkorn, Sunun Phuwiset, Chutlpha Promplang, Hitoshi Ito, Tanyarat Kongphu, Sarinya Yongsawat, Yohta Kawase:  takes us on a journey where almost everybody's heart gets broken just as the young people update their social media pages and take selfies. The movie is three hours long and those hours work very well as we journey from the neon lit brothels of the city, to the countryside with its mystic energy and landscape scarred by American bombs and then back again into the trap of prostitution in a country where there are no other means for earning a living and providing for one's family. It is difficult to resume the story better than Toranosuke Aizawa did in this screenplay. I was impressed by the musical score, the luscious cinematography, the very soulful comprehension of the people. English Subtitles • I LOVED IT! You can catch it next Sunday October 15th.
