4e IX SYMPOSIUM Embodied Space @ SAT

Gauche Left VR Lounge / Droite Right: Ghislaine Boddington Photos © Lena Ghio 2017
ENGLISH

The opening of this last Symposium lays out the points that would be elaborated during the following days. Ghislaine Boddington, an artist-curator, researcher and director, a specialist in body responsive technologies and immersion experiences, told us the time has come to discuss our morals and ethics in cyberspace. Her focus was on the body, how does the body feel, how is it expressed, how does it meet others in cyberspace? She has identified technologies that are increasing daily where exchanges happen between our "living emotional bodies" and group immersion through collaborative sharespaces: live presence, Telepresence, virtual presence, avatars and robotics, wearable computing, motion, sense + gesture tech. Follow a conversation here.

Technological art since its creation has aimed at augmenting human perception. The 4th Symposium examined everything! But the question of respect and ethics is far from resolved. International turmoils and governmental discussions that announce the intention of politicians to monitor our exchanges on social media are an example of abuse of power.

The conversation continued on May 31st 2017 with, on top of Ghislaine BoddingtonM Eifler, technology artist and researcher at eleVR (US),  Alido Di Giovanni, founder of SUMMIT and Luc Courchesne, Artist and Co-Curator of IX Symposium. Bottom line, it is ALWAYS a question of respect and good sense! You MUST protect yourself online, PERIOD! Discussions are ongoing and you must discuss this with your kids.

MAGNIFIQUE!

The masters of the VR experience,  Félix Lajeunesse and Paul Raphaël, of Félix et Paul Studios, told us of the meteoric ascension of their extraordinary enterprise. What I adore about their works is the beauty, the intimacy and the clarity of the films. I have seen most of their films, I visited the White House, I was on stage with Cirque du Soleil, I even visited Africa! If you go on their site, you will see images of their films. FABULOUS!

Although the Symposium is irresistibly rich in activities of all genres, I concluded my visit with the extraordinary presentation by Luc Mayrand, a peerless creator at Walt Disney Imagineering. What begins with studies, sketches, and drawings become a theme park where everything is in place to give you the closest possible experience of being in Pirates of the Caribbean. Check out this film to see the dazzling result of  Luc Mayrand's work that took 8 years to complete.

Enter the Dragon / The Science & Spirit of Emerge Art

Emerge Art Enter the Dragon, 2017, © Lena Ghio. Click on image to get better view of the movement of the dragon.

THE SCIENCE

It is undisputed that our observation of quantum systems affects their behaviors. A recent quantum theory prediction concerns the behavior of particles in the vacuum of space. The theory, in this case, is that what appears empty is in fact filled with virtual particles that pop in and out of existence. The dual nature of the particles, solid and energy wave, create the uncertainty principle in quantum physics.

According to Einstein, the speed of light is constant in a vacuum BUT "its speed passing through any given material depends on a property of that substance known as its index of refraction. By varying a material's index of refraction, researchers can influence the speed at which both real and virtual photons travel within it." Consider this as you look at the interplay of light and water as it creates the dragon. More intriguing scientific dialogue on this subject is found here.

Scientists have also observed that what happens in a vacuum is affected by what they put around it: « It is generally true that the amount of energy in a piece of vacuum can be altered by material around it, and the term "Casimir Effect" is also used in this broader context.» Emerge Art is a response from the particles inside the bowl of water to a) their surroundings AND b) the attention I, the observer, pay to them.

It is possible that Emerge Art is similar to the phenomenon scientists call sonoluminescence. One thing is for sure, we see at least 4 particle actions within Emerge Art that correspond to what is known in quantum physics: 1) particles appear out of nothing 2) they respond to what I place around the bowl of water 3) water (1.33) has a higher refractive index than a vacuum (1.00000) so it alters the speed of light as it goes through it, which may account for water's capacity to coalesce particles into forms people recognize 4) they, the particles in the water, are being observed by me.

Emerge Art is also a great illustration for the Theory of Everything because it shows how gravity clumps particles together to form meaningful shapes, and the Theory of Extra-Dimensions because the particles are behaving in ways outside what is considered the norm. CERN will prove extra-dimensions when it finds an unusual particle, for example.

THE SPIRIT

In this precise story, quantum mechanics made possible the appearance of a purple dragon in water. Various cultures have ascribed diverse meaning to this mythological animal, from ally to foe, from wise to evil. For humanity the struggle between good and evil is fierce because we are constantly judging ourselves and our fellow humans. For example, we are conscious that we must take lives, animal and vegetable, to eat and it is a struggle to justify to ourselves that we are "good" if we kill. Although we now know about sociopathy and psychopathy, where humans have no qualms about killing. The point is, for most of humanity there is a desire to be decent and to be in harmony with "the giver of life".

In psychology, water is the symbol of the subconscious. In Dr Carl Jung' s works he attempts to find a symbolic language in the human psyche that is universal. He calls it the collective unconscious. He studied countless ancient texts and compared the symbols he found there to the dream symbols of modern humans. He found intriguing links between the symbols of ancient scripts and the evolution of his patient's psyche. In the above sequence of Emerge Art, we see the head of a dragon emerge. Here is what he says about that symbol:

« The head of the dragon that "lives eternally", is called "vita gloriosa" (the life of the blessed) and "the angels serve it". The caput draconis is manifestly identified with Christ here... ( Matth., iv, 11, )»
*Translated from French Les Racines de la Conscience, Buchetl / Chastel, p.415

The reason this quote is significant for this Emerge Art is that I had surrounded the bowl with images of Jesus AND images of Emerge Art from the series Who is Jesus of Nazareth? The particles in the water produced a symbol of Jesus that is unknown to most people except the ancients and readers of Carl Jung, like myself.

For me, this dragon gives the clearest example yet of the possibilities of Emerge Art, the language of water. At this momentous time when we must reconnect with nature, it is reaching out to us.

L'AMAZONIE @ Pointe-à-Callière takes us to THE AMAZON 20.04. > 22.10.2017

Here we enter the authentic world of the ancient shamans. The exhibition, produced by  MEG - Musée d'ethnographie de Genève and adapted by Pointe-à-Callière, brings together objects that come from different communities of the vast territory that is South America that are all united by the practice of shamanism, the union between man and nature, the visible and the invisible. As you can observe from the somber images I took above, the lighting is very dim. This, on the one hand, is to protect the artifacts but also to give you a true sense of how it was for the people living in these rain forests, they were more often in the shades than in the sun. I was delighted by this journey into the wilderness.

a green ship!

Photos © Lena Ghio, 2017
ENGLISH

The Groupe Desgagnés et ses filiales invited dignitaries and journalists to visit their latest creation: a dual-duel asphalt-bitumen-chemical tanker, therefore GREEN! This is an important breakthrough for the future of our planet and humanity. We could not live as well as we do without the maritime transport of essential supplies for the survival and good functioning of our societies.  Paradoxically, we are at a time when we must seriously assess the impact of each of our investments on the planetary ecology.  Here is a first step in the right direction.

This project was made possible with the support of SUNCOR and in collaboration with Gaz Métro and the Port of Montreal who have installed the necessary equipments to supply the vessel with liquefied natural gas (LNG), which has undeniable environmental advantages by substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

For the scenography, you will see the magnificent creations displayed on a giant wedding cake, a creation of  Jurgen Bey, who had also done the spaces at the Jean Paul Gaultier headquarters, and the company UBU. You must absolutely pay attention to the details of the clothes and the exquisite materials that are done by hand. In the gif above, I focus on some hallucinating details from a few dresses. DHC / ART • ED ATKINS: MODERN PIANO MUSIC > 03.09.2017

Left: Ed Atkins / Right: detail from Hisser, 2015 Photos © Lena Ghio, 2017
Ed Atkins is known for his digital videos that are strikingly realistic. We get very close to the protagonist of his tales, Dave, an unpleasant chap who is invariably alone and alienated even when in situations that should bring community. The artist is addressing the impact of the digital age and of the internet on our perception of the human body in physical and spiritual space. The protagonist is vulnerable in the viewing blocks inside the large rooms of concrete walls where the sound is exquisite but the atmosphere stark. As I watched the videos, I felt many contrasting emotions towards the unfolding scenes: the rendering of the physical spaces is crisp and realistic; Dave is touching, pathetic, wounded.

I asked Ed Atkins about the intent of his works, were they sad and hopeless? He laughed and recognized that his videos could be noir but that he was not that gloomy and that in fact he was expecting a child soon.

The exhibition is composed of five of the artist's latest works: Even Pricks (2013), Hisser (2015), Happy Birthday!! (2014), Ribbons (2014) Safe Conduct (2016): that are displayed in a gallery each with seats so you can take your time with each piece. Cheryl Sims curated the exhibition. I stayed with the works for a good two hours and I will likely see them again.

DHC / ART does more than bring us some of the world's most exciting contemporary artists, it offers the public a chance to expand their knowledge and understanding of contemporary art practices  with creative workshops, guided tours, apps and downloads of all their major exhibitions including access to a reading room. Science VS Religion a NEW Argument

Who is Joan of Arc © Lena Ghio, 2014 - 2017
« The divorce of natural science and religion has been damaging to both. »
- Charles Taylor

This paper will look at how the current conditioning of both religious and scientific institutions are hurting knowledge and evolution and creating an illusory divide between the two. I am using the Emerge Art sequence above, Who is Joan of Arc, to argue how religion and science are oblivious to new knowledge because of their learned biases. I am a transdisciplinary artist who uses theoretical physics to calculate time and space when and where certain phenomena should occur to document how particles come together to create forms. My aim has always been to document and verify what I perceived, to gather knowledge and understanding that I could share in my art practice. I never expected to confront such extreme, hard wired brainwashed people.

Ironically, both science and religion began with observations of nature. Where the first examined the rules of nature to develop reason in humans, the second evolved away from nature to develop an intuitive and exalted relationship with invisible forces in an attempt to be better than nature.

Google defines science like this: the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.
Then defines religion like this: the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.

The way the two fields of study are argued by many scholars is often biased and sadly based on the categorical denial of presently recordable phenomena that may have been at the origin of religion. In other words, we now have evidence that supports that the apparently magical phenomena that were  described as miracles were real, not figments of people's imaginations. Some stories were no doubt the result of human imagination, but not all.  The Bill Nye & Ken Ham debate on Science vs Religion, for example, focused on a) writings in an old book ( The Bible ) that "believers" must NEVER question and b) an argument about the material aspect of geology, to debate the issue of when the world was created. How would this argument have benefitted from understanding the role of gravity, the Theory of Everything, the Theory of Extra-Dimensions? For one thing, they could both have evidence that nature is not done surprising us and defying our reason. Today we have the technology to fuse the scientific and religious perspectives of nature BUT we are hard-wired by millennia of programming not to do it?! However there will come an unavoidable tipping point as more and more people will document phenomena that were previously thought to be mythical.

There is the argument by comedians Ricky Gervais and Bill Maher, for example, who laugh at the concept that people could believe there is a big guy in the sky. I photographed this very significant phenomena when I was testing my equation for TOE:

It looks just like a BIG GUY IN THE SKY!!!!! To be fair, the phenomena did not give me a set of rules to bring back to humanity, it did not talk to me. It seemed to me that it came to look at me the way I was there to photograph IT. Scientists have brilliantly told me they were just cloud formations. They cannot even hear that what they are looking at is gravity compressing particles into a definite shape, a HUMAN shape, that I had predicted would manifest at that time in that space! They "believe" I have a religious or new-age agenda SO they cannot even verify the actuals! THAT IS UNSCIENTIFIC! Religious people fear it could be the DEVIL or impure because it comes from nature instead of man! They prefer, and are deeply conditioned to, think that God is only real  in the old books written by old men thousands or hundreds of years ago. They were taught they could NOT see God without these books and these teachers, that everything else is blasphemy. Their minds refuse to see the similarities between the above evidence and Ezekiel's vision because IF THEY DID, they could be doomed. From my perspective, I think Ezekiel perceived a similar event as the three events above. I prove my "apparitions" with photographs but cannot pierce the crusty conditioning, never mind about all the vested interests from both side of the argument. It is clear that all those men pontificating to us, and earning huge amounts of money for doing it, will NEVER admit they are wrong. And I am not asking them to either. I am showing YOU evidence and allowing YOU to see what our new technology is capable of. I want to develop an app that will allow us to speak with nature and Spirit directly! That is our future.

« All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident. »
« The fundament upon which all our knowledge and learning rests is the inexplicable. »
« The discovery of truth is prevented more effectively, not by the false appearance things present and which mislead into error, not directly by weakness of the reasoning powers, but by preconceived opinion, by prejudice. »
-Arthur Schopenhauer

My argument uses the phenomena of water speaking to us in images because it is EVIDENCE. If science was truly interested in "the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. " it would take this feature of water, of nature, seriously and try to understand what is happening here. I have provided the one thing that science needs above all else to live up to its standard for truth: EVIDENCE! Look at the example provided above that concerns Joan of Arc. The images made in water show there is a profound intelligence responding to my question. It is documented that the young woman disguised herself as a man, the fact that got her killed. Observe the androgynous nature of the face bottom right. The story is that Angels informed the young French girl on the extraordinary actions she had to take in the name of God. In image 2, we see the face of a young girl looking up at a mysterious being. This is in line with the story of this martyred Saint.
Image 2
When religion denies science, it is denying the possibility that we can now understand God, that we can understand this mystery objectively, with our new technology, that we can transcend the old books and see the mysterious for ourselves. It is robbing us of our inalienable right to commune with the Force that gave us life and the means to survive. Again I use the evidence of water responding to the question "who is Joan of Arc?" All the major religions have reported miracles related to water: http://www.africanwater.org/religion.htm / http://www.waterencyclopedia.com/Po-Re/Religions-Water-in.html Emerge Art suggests that water is very close to God or the Divine or creation. The photographs are EVIDENCE that pure creation occurs in water and, perhaps, pure creation occurs in nature in ways yet undocumented! Science and religion should be looking at the living phenomena instead of arguing over books written millennia ago.  Both should look at the new evidence that heralds new knowledge! Understanding this NATURAL function of water will answer many questions both scientific and theological, this cannot be stopped.
