SOPHIE CALLE
For the last and first time

Sophie Calle has gained an international reputation as one of the most important artists of our time. She fluidly uses photography, video, performance, and writing to capture the human soul through the peregrinations of her subjects. In this particular exhibition she researches the implications of blindness upon the individuals she worked with to produce the works. She is an adept story teller. For the series La Dernière Image, she went to Istanbul to listen to and write the accounts of individuals who, for the most part, had lost their sight after many years of seeing normally. She asks: "what was the last thing you saw?" The images and stories are simply moving to the core. My heart trembled and I fought my tears. The other major installation is Voir la mer. A group of blind people were taken to the seashore for the first time in their lives. You can sense them trembling with emotions at the sound and smell of the ocean as they stand so near it. They decided to visit the ocean because when Sophie Calle asked them what they believed beauty would look like, one person exclaimed:« The most beautiful thing I ever saw, was the ocean, the ocean as far as the eye could see. »

The texts that accompany the exhibition are framed in French but there are English documents near the entrances that provide the translation of the text. The curator is JOSÉE BÉLISLE, also curator of the Museum's collections.

Metamorphology @ MCA - 2014

Metamorphology
Métamorphologie

Internationally known artist, born in Great Britain and now living in Copenhagen, Simon Starling uses materials like limestone, marble, platinum, silver, steel, and wood to question the metamorphosis of various substances used by humans in a multiplicity of practical or whimsical ways. In this exhibition, first curated by DIETER ROELSTRAETE for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 2014, we recognize the influence of artists like HENRY MOORE, CONSTANTIN BRANCUSI, and MARCEL DUCHAMP who often use ready made objects to form their sculptures and produced very stylized art objects.

The exhibition is divided between a photographic section: Pictures for an exhibition that was done by the artist as a special order from Arts Club of Chicago: a sculptural section where you will see several famous pieces like Bird in Space 2004, 2004, and The Long Ton, 2009, to name a few: the complex installation/video Project for a Masquerade (Hiroshima), 2010-2011 and the also intriguing Autoxylopyrocycloboros, 2006, consisting of a Götscshmann slide projector showing 38 slides of the artist using the boat he is in to fuel the same boat.

This artist bases his creative process on many layers of research that apply to each project. To enjoy this work you must allow yourself to follow his path of discovery. The curator is LESLEY JOHNSTONE.
