A great week-end at FANTASIA! There was a lot of action and dazzling movies to experience among them: Appleseed Alpha from SHINJI ARAMAKI, Suburban Gothic hosted by RICHARD BATES Jr and Actors MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER and RAY WISE, and the moving Boyhood RICHARD LINKLATER's movie about childhood and adolescence in America where he follows a boy, played by ELLAR COLTRANE for 12 years with actors ETHAN HAWKE and PATRICIA ARQUETTE.

Une fin de semaine extraordinaire a FANTASIA! Il y avait beaucoup d'action et des films éblouissants à découvrir entre autres: le film Appleseed Alpha de SHINJI ARAMAKI, Suburban Gothic en présence du scénariste RICHARD BATES Jr et des acteurs MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER et RAY WISE, et l'émouvant film Boyhood un film de RICHARD LINKLATER qui parle de l'enfance et de l'adolescence en Amérique alors qu'il suit un garçon, le jeune acteur ELLAR COLTRANE, pendant 12 ans avec les acteurs ETHAN HAWKE et PATRICIA ARQUETTE.

I enjoyed the movies Kite, Jellyfish Eyes and the latest TERRY GILLIAM flick The Zero Theorem. 

Chuck Steel

Kite is the film adaption of the famous animé épisodes created by YASUOMI UMETSU about an orphaned girl, Sawa played by INDIA EISLEY, transformed into a sex slave by her guardian, Karl Aker played by SAMUEL L. JACKSON, and later into an assassin who does her guardian's bidding. Produced by RALPH ZIMAN after the untimely death of initial producer DAVID R. ELLIS's untimely death it remains very close to the original manga while being more "sexy" than sexual. The movie a neo-noir girl-with-guns action film does not have a complicated plot. It is a visual feast. The dark and gloomy sets are sliced with brilliant splashes of rich neon colors that evoke the beginnings of artistic photography in Japan circa 1910. There are exciting scenes of parkour, well timed executions, and blood galore! I was blown away by the esthetic delight the film produced in me. Before the full feature there was an excellent and gory animated short Chuck Steel-Raging Balls of Steel Justice by MIKE MORT.

 Kite est l'adaptation des célèbres épisodes d'animé crées par YASUOMI UMETSU au sujet d'une jeune orpheline, Sawa, interprétée par INDIA EISLEY, transformée par son gardien en esclave sexuelle, Karl Aker interprété par SAMUEL L. JACKSON, elle devient  éventuellement son assassin privé. Réalisé par RALPH ZIMAN après la mort prématurée du réalisateur original DAVID R. ELLIS, le film demeure très près de la manga originale tout en étant plus "sexy" que sexuel. Le film d'action néo-noir filles-à-fusil n'a pas une intrigue compliquée. C'est un festin visuel. Le décor sombre et maussade est tranché par des éclaboussures brilliantes de couleurs néons riches qui évoquent les débuts de la photographie japonaise circa 1910. Il y a des scénes excitantes de parkour, des exécutions bien synchronisées et du sang à volonté! J'étais ravie par le délice esthétique que le film a produit en moi. Avant le long métrage il y a eu un excellent et sanglant court-métrage d'animation Chuck Steel-Raging Balls of Steel Justice par MIKE MORT.

Kurage-bo et/and Masashi

JELLYFISH EYES the first movie by famed artist TAKASHI MURAKAMI looks at many subjects affecting humans, in particular children, after a major natural disaster. In this scenario it is the earthquake and tsunami of 2011 that devastated Japan. Masashi is a nine year old boy who has lost his father in the disaster. He moves to a new city with his mother and there his F.R.I.E.N.D. Kurage-bo ("Jellyfish Boy") appears. The story addresses religious beliefs as one of the children's mother becomes obsessed with cleansing the world of evil, it addresses the obsession with video games and technology, and the subject of intimidation. This is perhaps too many concerns for a children movie. I was fascinated to see how the renowned pop artist would juxtapose his candy colored art with the movie. Again the esthetics of the movie is very satisfying if the story contains cultural clichés that are difficult to resolve.

JELLYFISH EYES est le premier film du célèbre artiste TAKASHI MURAKAMI qui examine plusieurs sujets qui affectent l'humanité, en particulier les enfants, suite à une catastrophe naturelle majeure. Dans ce scénario il est question du tremblement de terre et tsunami qui a frappé le Japon en 2011.  Masashi is est un garçon de neuf ans qui a perdu son père lors du désastre. Il déménage dans une nouvelle ville avec sa mère et c'est là que son F.R.I.E.N.D. Kurage-bo ("garçon méduse") apparaît. L'histoire adresse les questions de croyances religieuses alors que la mère d'une des enfants devient obsédée à purifier le monde du mal, elle adresse notre obsession avec les jeux vidéos et les nouvelles technologies, et le sujet de l'intimidation. C'est peut-être trop de sujets à négocier pour un film d'enfants. J'étais fascinée à voir comment l'artiste de renommée insérerait ses oeuvres aux couleurs bonbon au cinéma. Encore l'esthétique du film est très satisfaisante même si l'histoire contient des clichés culturels difficiles à résoudre.

 The Zero Theorem is the new TERRY GILLIAM movie that made its debut this week-end @ Fantasia. It unfolds in the same chaotic style as his two well known features The Twelve Monkeys and Brazil. And the movie questions similar issues about the universe, God, politic, love, sex, technology, science, industry and our ever commercialized environment. It stars one of my favorite actors CHRISTOPH WALTZ as Qohen Leth aka "We" a man obsessed with an existential question that keeps him isolated from life and love. The female lead is the gorgeous MÉLANIE THIERRY as Bainsley, the woman who can bring the hero a new life. It is like a colorful party, drunk and wild!

The Zero Theorem est le nouveau long métrage de TERRY GILLIAM qui a fait sa première @ Fantasia. Il se déroule à la même cadence chaotique que ses deux autres grands succès cinématographiques  The Twelve Monkeys et Brazil. Et le film questionne les problèmes similaires tels l'univers, Dieu, la politique, l'amour, le sexe, la technologie, la science, l'industrie et notre environnement hyper commercialisé. La vedette du film est un de mes acteurs favorit,  CHRISTOPH WALTZ dans le rôle de Qohen Leth aka "Nous" un homme obsédé par une question existentielle qui le garde isolé de la vie et de l'amour. Le rôle féminin principal est tenu par la superbe MÉLANIE THIERRY comme Bainsley, la femme qui pourrait donner une nouvelle vie au héros. C'est comme un party coloré, sauvage et ennivré!
