BERNIE

I had to see this movie because I wanted to see how JACK BLACK and SHIRLEY MACLAINE would be on screen together! Listed as a black comedy, based on a real murder, the murder of Marjorie Nugent ( Shirley MacLaine) by her friend Bernie Tiede (Jack Black).

In the town of Carthage, Texas, USA, Bernie Tiede was a well liked, gentle mannered, assistant funeral director. When Marjorie Nugent's husband died, Bernie took care of her, visited her. Eventually she became very possessive of him and he cracked!

The beauty of this film is how the real townspeople of Carthage are used to recall the Bernie Tiede they knew. Their authenticity was delightful to me: their accent, their chain smoking, their heartfelt insane remarks like the witness who was on Bernie's side said: "It's not as bad as people say; he only shot her four times, not five."

I was not disappointed by the performances either. JACK BLACK embodied Bernie all the way down to his toes: SHIRLEY MACLAINE'S comic genius roared as she overchews her food in one scene where we witness Bernie unravelling slowly: and MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY is seriously hilarious as District Attorney Danny Buck.
I truly enjoyed it!
