Chronicles of a Disappearance // Chroniques d'une disparition

En Français plus bas

This winter @ DHC/ART five internationally acclaimed artists speak to us about the ephemeral nature of life, the absurdity of certain political attitudes, and murder.

We begin the journey with TARYN SIMON's An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar (2007) that explores with her formal photo-journalistic style some of the most unusual locations and subjects. I was saddened by her photo of the PLAYBOY Magazine translated in braille because of the popular cliché men use that they buy the magazine only for the articles, and obviously this blind man can only enjoy the articles.

Next we visit the work of JOSÉ TOIRAC, OPUS (2005). He decomposes a speech by FIDEL CASTRO to illustrate the dictator's obsession with numbers. In my view the work reflects a wider obsession with numbers that influences all of us: How many people came to the event, bought the product, saw the movie: How much money was made in how much time: How much are you worth, how much do you weigh, and the merciless how old are you?

On the fourth floor we experience a compelling movie by OMER FAST, 5000 Feet is the Best (2011). This was my favorite piece of the whole show. We literally could not take our eyes away. The questions it raises are at the heart of modern day warfare and what we as sentient beings should be.

From there we move to the other site of the Gallery to experience the dramatic art of TERESA MARGOLLES who dares to question the horror of politics and murder with her famous work Plancha (2010).

Finally the quietly somber film June 8, 1968 (2009) by PHILIPPE PARRENO that transforms a sunny day into a day of profound sadness as it recreates the journey of assassinated Presidential hopeful ROBERT KENNEDY's body from New York to Washington.

Once again curator JOHN ZEPPETELLI has brought together an impressive narrative structured from the esoteric language of contemporary art.

Au quatrième on vit l'expérience du film irrésistible d'OMER FAST, 5000 Feet is the Best (2011).

LYONEL FEININGER

En Français plus bas

LYONEL FEININGER: FROM MANHATTAN TO THE BAUHAUS opened last week at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. For me it was a fascinating discovery of a previously unknown artist. What a joy! We follow the artist's evolution through the drawing of comic books for German humour magazines to sublime works, inspired by his other passion, music. Feininger was born in America but lived much of his life in Germany and became involved with the Bauhaus movement after World War I.

The images I photographed represent what I loved best about the exhibition. He allowed music to influence the structure of his work, the transparent layers of luminous paint create a mystical aura within his canvases. At the end of the exhibition we see some exquisite black and white photographs from his son ANDREAS FEININGER.

The exhibition will be opened until May 13, 2012.

The wonderful catalog that accompanies this exhibition is an enriching addition to any art book collector's library. There are many events open to the public, commented visits, classes. So please consult the links below as places fill up fast.

In tandem with the exhibition, the Fondation ARTE MUSICA will present eight concerts from Thursday March 8 to Sunday March 11 2012.

GINA CARANO is a shining presence in this suspense thriller. She is known as the "Face of Women's Mixed Martial Arts" and she is exciting to watch. I truly enjoy Martial Arts and a good fight scene and this movie delivers an exciting punch, spiced with dynamic scenes of Parkour as chases take us through various cityscapes. With a cast of the most seductive actors of the moment including the luscious MICHAEL FASSBENDER it should be a smash. Unfortunately the weak spots are major. The story follows lines of thought that make absolutely no sense and distract from the pleasure this production could provide. Case in point: in the beginning our heroine Mallory Kane (CARANO) escapes with the help of a young man and proceeds to tell him her story, but there is no point to this act and it makes the story weak! But I still enjoyed it a lot.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST // LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE

I began this NEW YEAR with a revamped classic from WALT DISNEY STUDIOS production, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. The children were remarkably quiet as the romantic fairy tale unfolded in splendor and 3D.
I LOVED IT!
Tickets are now on sale for the January 13th 2012 official opening.
