This a very rare story on film, a story of a deep relationship between two women, a story of traditional Chinese customs, a revelation of how women kept it together in a time when they had no rights. It is told through the writing of two young contemporary Chinese girls who have taken the ancient vow of becoming Laotung, sisters by sacred ritual like a man and woman marry and become family.
The film by WAYNE WANG, written by LISA SEE, with LI BING BING and GIANNA JUN as the two co-stars moved me deeply.
First there is the ancient ritual of feet binding baby girls had to go through to be acceptable mates, when the two sisters first become acquainted. Then the movie becomes poetic and moving as the women go through all of life's cycles trying to look out for each other the best they can.
It is not a fast moving movie, it is a depth movie. If there is an important female in your life, it will touch you. The film is shot in Shanghai and is visually gorgeous.
I loved it and I cried because I remembered my beautiful sister JOANNE GHIO who died too young.
