SAM TAYLOR-WOOD's first feature film, NOWHERE BOY, exudes with her rich visual language. A link below will take you to some of her works in major museums. She is an expert at conveying emotional drama with unique approaches to her subjects. I recall when she came to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montreal in 2002, she showed videos of victims of family violence telling their horrific stories behind masks. The effect was shattering. You will recognize this aspect of her style in one scene where JOHN LENNON, played by AARON JOHNSON, is fighting with his mother Julia, played by ANNE-MARIE DUFF, and we see the sadness in her face reflected through an old spotted hand mirror.

The movie is about the coming of age of one of my favorite human beings of all times. I always knew John Lennon lost his mother at a young age, but I never knew he lived with his aunt Mimi, played by KRISTIN SCOTT-THOMAS, that he had believed his mother to be dead to find out she had in reality been living all that time at walking distance from him. I can't imagine how he must have felt when he saw her again! The movie is very moving but upbeat as we see the creative genius of John Lennon coping, adapting, and innovating through each challenge.

Le premier long-métrage de SAM TAYLOR-WOOD, NOWHERE BOY, exude de son vocabulaire visuel si riche. Un lien plus bas vous transportera vers certaines de ses oeuvres dans les plus grands musées du monde. Elle est experte à transmettre les drames émotionels avec des approches uniques à ses sujets. Je me souviens quand elle est venue au Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montréal elle montrait des vidéos de personnes victimes de violence familliale qui racontaient leurs histoires horrifiques derrière un masque. L'effet était dévastateur. Vous reconnaîtrez cet aspect de son style dans une scène dans laquelle JOHN LENNON , interpréter par AARON JOHNSON, se querelle avec sa mère Julia, interpréter par ANNE-MARIE DUFF, et on voit toute la tristesse dans le visage de celle-ci dans le reflet d'un mirroir à main salit.

C'est un film de passage à la maturité d'un de mes êtres humains favorits de tous les temps. J'ai toujours sû que John Lennon avait perdu sa mère à un jeune âge, mais je n'avais jamais sû qu'il avait grandit avec sa tante Mimi, interpréter par KRISTIN SCOTT-THOMAS, qu'il avait cru que sa mère était morte pendant qu'elle vivait à quelques kilomètres de lui pendant tout ce temps. Je ne peux imaginer comment il s'est senti quand il l'a revue. Le film est très émouvant mais optimiste car on voit le génie créatif de John Lennon endurer, s'adapter, et innover à chaque défi.
